Price Range - The price range on kids luggage actually varies greatly. It is not unheard of to see a $20 piece of children’s luggage sitting right next to a piece that is well over $100. Price will obviously be an important factor in decision making, so you will want to take this into consideration with thorough thought.

Type – With regards to the type, this is where you have a lot of choice. Some of the most popular choices are backpacks, rolling suitcases, duffel bags, rolling backpacks, and many more. A couple things you will want to consider here are the type of traveling you will be doing, and what will be best for your child. For example, if you are going to be doing a lot of walking in the airport you may want something that rolls.

Will Your Child Like This Next Year? – Kids do two things very fast; change their minds and grow. One day they will absolutely love something, and then next they will no longer be interested or will have out grown it. Keep these things in mind when selecting a piece of luggage, especially if you want to save yourself time and money in the future. Before buying, ask your self “do I think my child will still like this next year?” and “will this still fit my child’s size in a year?” You certainly do not want to have to go out and buy all new stuff every year, or even worse every time you take a vacation.

Durability – Along the same lines is durability. You will want to look for something that is going to last, not something that will break or wear out after one vacation or school year. This is probably especially true with boys, who are tough on just about everything they own. One way to find out how durable a piece of luggage is, is to read reviews online, you can usually get a lot of good information from them.

Using Luggage for School

A major part of any child’s life is going to school. In fact, it is probably the thing that takes up most of their day besides maybe sleeping. As any parent knows the process of going to and from school can sometimes be a hectic and frustrating time. One thing that could make this whole process worse is if your child has a lot of things to carry to and from school, without the correct equipment.

There has been a lot of discussion lately about the weight of kids backpacks, and how they could potentially cause health issues including shoulder and neck pain. If you child is going to be using a traditional style backpack then there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind.

  • Try to keep your child’s backpack below 10-20% of their body weight. This is a good percentage to make sure that they are not carrying to much weight.
  • If they are walking to school or having to wear their backpacks for an extended period of time you may want to make sure this is closer to the lower percentage.
  • Make sure they are wearing the backpack properly to the manufacturers specifications. For example, wearing the backpack with with only one strap on one shoulder could lead to complications.

There are also some signs you may want to look for that could let you know if your child’s backpack may be too heavy.

  • Has your child mentioned or complained of pain in their neck and shoulders, or have they experienced any tingling in the arms and hands?
  • When they are wearing their backpack do they walk differently, slouch , or try to adjust themselves for the weight of the backpack.
  • Are they routinely carrying more than 10-20% of their body weight?

If you find one or more of these to be true, it may be time to make some changes in the way your child gets their belongings to and from school. Luckily, there are a number of alternatives that are available. Following is a couple of suggestions that you may want to consider if you child is experiencing any difficulties.

  • Rolling Backpacks – Rolling backpacks are great, they really give your child the best of both worlds. Basically it is a regular backpack with wheels and a handle like a you would find on a rolling suitcase. They can be worn like a regular backpack or rolled like a rolling suitcase, so if your child has a heavy load, is tired, or feeling sore they can roll their backpack instead of wearing it.
  • Rolling Suitcase - Rolling suitcases are becoming, if not already one of the most popular types of luggage. If you take a look around any airport you will notice that one of the things you see the most is the rolling suitcase, and more often you will find them on college and other school campus’s. These don’t have the versatility of being able to be worn, but if your child is having problems then you might not want them wearing a backpack anyway.

These two types of luggage could really be beneficial in helping your child avoid health problems related to carrying heavy loads to and from school

It is important to remember that if you child mentions any of the symptoms above, that you recognize them and take action. Even if they are not experiencing anything, it is always a good idea to keep an eye on their backpack weight and make sure it is not exceeding the recommended limits.

Popular Kids Luggage Brands

There are a wide variety of companies that manufacture and sell kids luggage. Some are small companies that strictly focus on luggage for children, or even a subset, and some are huge companies that most everyone has heard of. Here is a list and some brief information on some of the more popular brands.

Disney- Whether we are talking about kid’s luggage or not, Disney is one of the most recognized brands in the world. Children grow up with Disney, engaged in their stories and movies, and loving their many great characters. This is one of the main reasons that Disney Luggage is so popular among children. If you decide to go with a piece of Disney luggage your child will no doubt love the fact that one of their favorite characters is on it. It can take something as mundane as a suitcase and really turn it into something they love and cherish. Disney makes their own luggage, but you will also find a number of pieces that are made by a company called Heys Luggage International. These will often be referred to as “heys disney luggage” or “disney luggage by heys”. They mainly make rolling suitcases with various Disney characters on them. Disney itself makes a number of different rolling suitcases and other bags.

Lego – Just about every kids has played with legos at some point, and some really enjoy them. Now they can go one step further with lego luggage. Lego actually makes a wide variety of backpacks, rolling backpacks, and duffel bags. They come in a different colors, sizes, and usually have the “lego man” on them. Their designs are not super flashy, but they definitely make for some cool pieces. Four Peas - Four Peas is a company based out of Chicago, IL that makes some really cool, functional luggage for kids. Their product line includes backpacks, suitcases, bags and other accessories. Four Peas was founded out of necessity by Casey Baca. As she began to take vacations with her oldest daughter she realized that it was better to have a special bag for her, but she could not find one that she truly loved. She decided to fill the void, and Four Peas was born. Now all parents and children can enjoy the products of Four Peas.

Mercury  - Mercury luggage has been around for over 60 years and makes a wide variety of luggage. Their kids line includes the “Going to Grandma’s Collection” which includes many different backpacks, duffels, and rolling suitcases that are all made out of extra durable materials to stand up to the rigors of  children.

If you are going to be shopping for your child, these are definitely some of the more common brands that you will see on the market. Types of Kids Luggage

If you are getting ready to purchase a piece of luggage for your child, then you will have no shortage of different options to choose from. Just about every type you would find in the adult market, you can find for children as well. Here is an overview of some of the more popular types you will find.

Backpacks- Everyone knows what a backpack is, and everyone has probably even had one at some point in time. Backpacks are great! They’re versatile, rugged, and can be used for just about anything your child might do including; school, sports practice, and vacations. They are made from a wide variety of materials, most are fabric, little kids backpacks are sometimes plastic, and more recently they have been made of mesh. Sometimes the mesh backpacks are required in school so teachers and administrators can see in them. Backpacks also come in many different shapes and sizes with many different functions.

Rolling Backpacks – Rolling backpacks are becoming more and more popular lately. Parents and kids like them because they can be worn on the shoulders, or easily rolled on the ground. This makes it a lot easier if the backpack is weighed down by books or something else heavy. In fact, standard backpacks had come under scrutiny for putting too much weight on the shoulders. Some have said that if loaded with too much weight they can lead shoulder and neck problems. This is one of the reasons that rollings backpacks have become so popular, not only among kids but adults too.

Rolling Suitcases - Much like rolling backpacks, rolling suitcases are very popular also. In fact, if you go to the airport you will probably see most adults(as well as children) with these. Suitcases- Yes, they actually still sell regular old suitcases, and they even make them for kids! The general category of kids suitcases is huge. They come in many different shapes and sizes, and can be used for many different circumstances. Some suitcases can be used for only short trips, while some can be used for up to several weeks at a time. Obviously some have wheels so that they can roll, and some need to be carried. Some suitcases also double as toys such as the ones made by Trunki. When looking for a suitcase for your child you literally have hundreds of options to choose from. Because there is such a vast variety with these, one of the main things to consider is what its primary purpose will be, you can use this as your starting point.

Luggage Sets- If you plan on doing  a decent amount of traveling with your little one, then you may want to look into purchasing a luggage set. Initially they can be more expensive, but in the long run they are well worth it. Basically a luggage set is two or more pieces of luggage that are sold together. Adult luggage sets usually come with a few different sized suitcases. but kids sets generally come with a regular size suitcase, a backpack, and a small travel/accessory bag. These sets can be very useful if you are planning on taking a longer trip, because if you are taking a long trip you might need to use more than one piece of luggage.

These are really the main categories of kids luggage you will find on the market today. As we mentioned previously, the type you decide on should really be dictated by what it is going to be used for. For example, a piece that would be great for a two week vacation, may not be best for going to school, or a weekend trip. These are all things to take into consideration when making a purchase.
